The Athens Athletic Hall of Fame offers Four $500 scholarships to outstanding student athletes to help them continue their education.  These scholarships recognize students who show community involvement and leadership attributes. Applications are available at the Counseling Office and with Athletic Directors at the Athens area high schools. If you are unable to obtain a copy of the application, please email [email protected] and we will send one to you.
The Hall of Fame scholarships are named after Four individuals, Billy Henderson, Aaron Heard, Claude Williams, and Ed Benson. Their work within the community exemplified the spirit of teamwork, leadership, service, character, and that participation in athletics develops these traits in young people. All Four men were key players in the development and early success of the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame.

Billy Henderson Teamwork Scholarship: Coach Billy Henderson was an Athens icon. As the head football coach at Clarke Central High School, he led the Gladiators to multiple state championships, but his true impact on the community lay within his ability to bring people together to work toward a goal. In doing so, he changed the lives of thousands of students and their families and he helped to make our community a better place to live.

Claude Williams Leadership Scholarship: Claude Williams’ vision and leadership led to the founding of the “The Athens Daily News” (now the Athens Banner Herald) and local radio station WRFC.  Throughout his adult life, Claude Williams was active in Athens businesses, community organizations, and was always ready to help out and/or lead the way.

Ed Benson Service Scholarship: Ed Benson had a passion for serving others and, as a result of his service, he was a pillar of the Athens community.  He was a mentor throughout the community working with businesses as well as service and educational organizations.  He was a public servant who led by example.

Aaron Heard Sportsmanship Scholarship: Aaron Heard had a passion for serving others and, as a result of his service, he was a pillar of the Athens community.  He was a mentor throughout the community working with businesses as well as service and educational organizations.  He was a public servant who led by example.
